Palace Project Update

Detail of an eagle, part of the Guise coat of arms

For the past six months some of Scotland’s very best embroiderers have been working on spectacular heraldic designs for the palace.

Our picture shows the detail of an eagle, part of the Guise coat of arms. It will form part of a magnificent cloth of estate that will hang in the Queen’s Presence Hall above a chair of estate of the kind in which Mary of Guise, James V’s queen, would have sat to hold court.

In an age where status was everything, cloths of estate were used to display your social status. Entering a sumptuous hall, and coming face to face with the Scottish queen beneath a fabulous work of art such as this, would surely have left many otherwise confident subjects dry mouthed and awestruck.

The splendid carved ceiling boss also shows features from the Guise coat of arms, in this case three alerions (eagle-like mythical birds) skewered on a single arrow. The ceiling boss is one of several that will go on the ceiling of the Queen’s Bedchamber.

Our last picture shows the progress being made in painting Mary’s bedchamber – with the delightful cherubs and naturalistic designs on the walls beneath the deep green and gold panelled ceiling.
