Mary of GuiseMary of Guise

Queen Dowager, widow to King James V and mother to Mary Queen of Scots. Stirling Castle was in her ownership as part of her marriage dowry to the late King. Stirling was considered to be a secure and comfortable residence to hold court and bring up the infant Queen.

A strong woman in a man's world, her commitment to her daughter and Scotland saw her rewarded with the governorship once the young Mary had departed for France. Marie brought with her French fashion but also integrated into the Scots way of life, even taking the time to learn the language.

The Queen dowager would predominantly be dressed in black, purple and crimson and this would be highlighted with jewellery, Scots pearl and grand rings of ruby and diamond.

Widow to King James V, Mary of Guise was a strong woman in a man's world.

Marie de Guise was said to be a night owl, who loved playing cards and placing wagers with her courtiers. It is thought probable that Marie with her Medici family connections brought ‘knickers’ to Scotland for the first time.

Before her marriage to James V she was approached by his uncle Henry VIII as a prospective bride. She refused this offer knowing the English King’s reputation and was quoted as saying “I may be big in person but my neck is small.”
