Welcoming in 2010
Come along and enjoy Hogmanay with us in two very different ways. You can either see in the New Year in 21st-century style, or slip back to the last millennium and see what the castle would have been like during a royal visit in 1842.

On 31 December there’s the chance to join Sandi Thom, the MacDonald Brothers, Gary Mullen and special guests to see in the New Year on Stirling Castle esplanade. It’s a big night at a special location – with the promise of great entertainment. The event is hosted by Historic Scotland, and organised by Stirling Council and Central FM – whose DJs will be in action from 9.30pm.
Stirling’s Hogmanay Party will be a fun and friendly way to rock out of 2009 and into 2010. And when midnight arrives there will be the spectacle of massed pipes and drums crossing the castle drawbridge as thousands of fireworks set the night alight in a blaze of colour. For more information visit

Then, on the weekend of 2 and 3 January there’s Happy Old Year which looks back to an unofficial visit to the castle by the young Queen Victoria and her new husband Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg as they toured Scotland. At that time the castle was a military garrison where soldiers were recruited, trained and deployed across the world to build the British Empire.
The event reflects two very different worlds, contrasting the glittering Victorian royal court, with its high fashion and strict etiquette, with the daily life of soldiers and their families, getting by on army rations. Visitors can meet the beautiful young queen and find out her thoughts as she tours the castle with the governor and hears stories of her ancestors. They can also hear the court gossip from London and take part in Scottish dancing as the queen and her consort learn the steps. Then join the soldiers to see what’s on the menu for lunch, get the kids involved in a lesson from the military schoolteacher, and find out how the army celebrated New Year.
Happy Old Year is designed for all the family and takes place between noon and 3.30pm each day and is included in the standard ticket price.
