A Sense of Place

This year Stirling Castle welcomed its first Artist in Residence. Dunblane-based Iona Leishman joined us in July and during her residency she has created a collection of inspiring and stunning work which will go on display in an exhibition at the castle this December.

Woman and Her House by Iona Leishman

“A Sense of Place” will feature key works from Iona’s residency including signature piece Woman and Her Horse.

Prints of some of the more traditional views of the castle are available for sale in the castle’s gift shop and Iona’s work has even been used on this year’s Stirling Castle Christmas Card.

One of Iona’s aims during the residency was to capture the life of the castle as it is today and as it may have been in the past. She has also been busy sharing her knowledge and expertise with visitors to the castle in her drop in sessions as well as helping local school children develop their portfolios. The residency has been such a huge success that it has been extended until the end of March 2012 and the concept is being rolled out at other Historic Scotland sites next year.

Iona’s exhibition, “A Sense of Place” runs from 2nd-31st December 2011 and entry is included in the admission price. All artwork is available to buy
