Queen's Stamp of Approval
The Stewart Kings plus Mary Queen of Scots recently returned to Stirling Castle in the company of Neil Oliver. The archaeologist and presenter unveiled a new set of Royal Mail Stamps featuring figures from the royal dynasty.

Stirling was chosen because it was a highly-favoured residence of the Stewarts. It is all the more appropriate given the current £12 million investment in returning the castle’s royal palace, built by James V, to how it may have been in its 16th-century heyday. Even more so because it was the early childhood home of Mary, Queen of Scots who has never before appeared on a Royal Mail stamp.
The stamps feature portraits of James I, II, III, IV, V and VI as well as Mary, who spent her early years in the palace. Neil said: “I’m delighted that Royal Mail is helping bring history to life through its series of stamps celebrating the history of Britain’s kings and queens.”
The House of Stewart stamps are the latest in Royal Mail’s 600-year journey celebrating the royal houses of the UK. Like the two previous issues, The Houses of Lancaster and York and The House of Tudor, this royal retrospective features period portraits of each monarch.
