Get down to Doune
Anyone buying a ticket for Stirling Castle can now get 20% off at Doune Castle.
A medieval royal residence and a famous film set – Doune Castle is just a short drive from Stirling. Standing in isolated splendour beside the river Teith, it’s a real gem. From 1st May until 30th June we are offering anyone who comes to Stirling Castle a 20% discount at Doune*. For a family of two adults and two kids, that effectively means one child gets in free.

The castle is more complete than many and has the splendid Duke’s Hall, which was restored in the 19th century to try and recapture the spirit of its days as a main residence of the Stewarts of Albany. This family, which ruled Scotland while James I was held prisoner in England, eventually suffered bloody consequences at the hands of the king who blamed them for failing to secure his release. Doune was then returned to royal hands and was used as a hunting lodge and also as a handy home for royal widows such as Margaret Tudor, queen of James IV.
In more recent times it was made famous by the movie comedy classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail, for which it was the main set. The castle has been a magnet for Python fans ever since. And there is still a strong link with the Pythons as the castle audio tour is narrated by Terry Jones who co-directed the 1975 film.
On top of all this there is also a lovely walk around the castle and by the river. This is complete with a sculpture trail which highlights some of the area’s superb wildlife, from the salmon to the delightful squirrels.
