Children's Workshops
Our highly-popular Heads of Clay workshop is making a welcome return. It is one of two sets of themed children’s workshops being run by castle education officer Kirsten Wood over the next few weeks.
On the weekend of Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May 2011, youngsters will be able to use their artistic skills to model their own version of one of the world-famous Stirling Heads. These are fantastic metre-wide, hand-carved, 16th-century oak medallions which show the faces of kings, queens, Roman emperors, Classical heroes and characters from court like a jester and a poet.
The special sessions will let children find out about the real heads and why they were made. They then have the fun of moulding their own miniature versions and putting whatever face they like on them. They can make self-portraits, or images of their mum or dad, seen as a Renaissance nobleman or lady. Air-drying clay is used, so by the time the family has taken a good look round the castle and got home it should be ready to paint.
The Courtly Life Workshops, which are on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th April 2011, provide a fun way to learn about costume, dance and other aspects of royal life. Children find out about courtly rituals and there is a handling box of objects that link back to the Renaissance world.
