We’re really picking up the pace of preparations now for our spectacular opening of the castle’s Renaissance royal palace on 4th and 5th June.
As the countdown to Stirling Castle Presents – A Palace Fit For a Queen continues we’re making final arrangements for the exciting entertainments planned for our weekend-long celebrations. And the talented costumed performers who’ll bring to life the splendour of Scotland’s 16th century royal court in our stunning refurbished palace apartments are all busy rehearsing their parts. The large cast features a host of colourful characters who played key roles in palace life during the 1540s; visitors will get their first glimpse of the leading players as they make their dramatic entrance in the Royal Procession on Saturday 4th.
At 11.45am the esplanade will see the arrival on horseback of Mary of Guise and Regent Arran, followed by Mary’s little daughter, Mary Queen of Scots, with her nursemaid. The royal party will be accompanied by armed guards and an entourage of courtiers, ladies-in-waiting, musicians, jesters and jugglers. Bringing up the rear will be the ‘royal bucket bearers’ who have the privilege of clearing up after their Graces’ mounts - those performers must have picked the short straw for that esteemed role! A cannon salute will greet the arrival at the drawbridge of the majestic Marys, and after handing out alms to the paupers gathered to see them, they’ll be welcomed by the keeper of the castle, Lord Erskine.
Make sure you’re there too to join the royal reception party at our unmissable palace opening on 4th June. Remember, entry is by pre-purchased ticket only so do book now to avoid disappointment. And, just a suggestion: when you get up close and personal to royalty on our ‘big day’, you may want to keep a distance from those stately buckets!
