Pipers drum up visitors

by StirlingCastle 23. March 2011 02:56

News that the castle would be hosting dozens of young army pipers, drummers and Highland dancers certainly stirred up a lot of public interest. More than 1,200 visitors passed through the gates last Saturday and were treated to a superb display of military music from 60 members of the University Officer Training Corps (UOTC). Talking to visitors I was left in no doubt that they thoroughly enjoyed their day out.

The competitors enjoyed themselves too, after all there could hardly be a more spectacular backdrop for their performances. Many had travelled quite some way to take part as the bands represented were from all over Scotland, as far north as Aberdeen.

While I’ve seen all sorts of events and activities up here, from huge gala dinners to filming for big screen movies, there was something special about the Northern Lights Pipes and Drums Competition. Wherever you wandered in the castle there was a buzz of activity, as musicians practised and prepared – or actually played for the judges. Watching members of the four bands marching round the Queen Anne Gardens was impressive and became spectacular when they all joined forces in the later afternoon to Beat the Retreat.

Up until the 1960s the castle was the training depot for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, so this event was an echo of its past. It was also such a success that we hope that similar events might take place here in the future.

Oh, and just a quick reminder – entry to the castle is still at a specially reduced cost until April 1. Right now the tickets are £7 (down from £9) for adults, £5.50 (down from £7.20) and children £4 (down from £4.50) due to the refurbishment of the shops.
