There’s a chance to delve into the history of the castle’s Renaissance royal palace with Radio 4’s popular Making History programme at 3pm on Tuesday, 24 May. Broadcaster and historian Fiona Watson joined us for a look round ahead of the public reopening of the palace, after its £12 million refurbishment project. Talking to Fiona yesterday she said: ‘It was a real privilege to be able to witness history in the making - not only are the royal apartments out of this world but the sheer hard work involved in putting it all together is quite staggering.’
Fiona looked round in the company of some of the key members of the Historic Scotland team who have been working away for years to return the palace to how it might have looked in the 1540s. The work is all but complete now – though the final touches are still being made including the painting of some superb heraldry on one of the ceilings – but it looks fantastic.
The public can see it all for the first time at our weekend of celebrations for the opening on 4 and 5 June, but tickets need to be bought in advance from this website. It’ll be really colourful and fun, featuring 60 costumed performers. We very much hope to see you there – and have a listen to Fiona’s programme for a foretaste of all there is to see.
