If you imagine it would have been pretty dark and dismal in a Scottish castle in the 16th century, think again. You’ll be able to find out just how wrong you are at Stirling Castle Presents – A Palace Fit For a Queen on 4th and 5th June when visitors will get their first glimpse of the superbly recreated Renaissance royal apartments. You’ll have your eyes opened wide and your breath taken away when you step inside and experience the sheer vibrancy and colour of the Scottish Stewart court.
Beautiful, bold decoration throughout brings to life the opulence and splendour of the palace of the 1540s when it was home to the widow of James V, Mary of Guise, and her young daughter, Mary Queen of Scots. Rich hues are everywhere, adorning the ceilings and walls with exquisite handpainted designs in deep reds and greens. The intricacies of carvings and stonework are highlighted in vivid tones. Heraldic artwork in luminous blues and yellows, ornately embellished with gold, makes a dramatic statement. Fine trompe l’oeil designs in more subtle tints add depth and fascination, and splendid sweeping friezes in a broad palette set off the impressive architecture.
And if all of the lavish painted decoration wasn’t colourful enough, the sumptuous soft furnishings - from the luxurious purples of silk wall hangings and curtains to the violet-brown of velvet bed trimmings and dazzling array of shades in the gloriously detailed tapestries – as well as the magnificent ornamentation on the furniture and ironwork provide yet another dimension.
So, make sure you’re one of the first to have the pleasure of this great visual treat; book now for our palace opening!
